Utilization Pattern and Course of Treatment with Traditional Oriental Medicine among Domestic Domiciliary Disabled Persons with Brain Disorders

Abstract

Background: To survey the utilization pattern and course of treatment with traditional oriental medicine among domestic domiciliary disabled persons with brain disorders.
Methods: A total of 1,903 disabled persons with brain disorders in the big cities and other regions of the Republic of Korea were interviewed using a questionnaire inquiring about their general characteristics and utilization pattern and course of treatment with traditional oriental medicine after occurrence of a brain disorder.
Results: One thousand four hundred and seventy disabled persons (77.2%) received traditional oriental medicine treatment after occurrence of a brain disorder. Receiving traditional oriental medicine treatment was associated with age at onset, age at interview, location and level of disability (P<0.05). The most common reasons for receiving traditional oriental medicine treatment were the ¡®belief about its effectiveness¡¯ (64.7%) and the ¡®recommendation of an acquaintance¡¯ (32.0%). The main sequence of events in receiving traditional oriental medicine treatment was ¡®western medicine ¡æ tradi-tional oriental medicine¡¯. Onset age, age, and educational level significantly influenced the course of receiving traditional oriental medicine treatment (P<0.05).
Conclusion: Traditional oriental medicine treatment was popular in disabled persons with brain disorders. Many of these disabled persons used traditional oriental medicine treatment according to the generally accepted ideas and/or recommendations of friends and family. Public health education is needed about such illness and the available treatment.
